Rifles

The different calibers, fabricates, ammunition and telescopes have always been a serious point of discussion amongst serious hunters.

We recommend the following calibers for plain game hunting in the Eastern Cape : 270 , 7mm Rem. Magnum , 30-06 and 300 Win Magnum. Any other calibers in this size range will also do .

It’s extremely important to bring the rifle that one is confident and comfortable with and also accomplishes good groupings with at the shooting range.

Watch out for rifles with heavy recoil, they tend to affect ones shooting ability negatively after a few days of hunting.

It is highly advisable to go to the shooting range to practice as often as possible before the hunt commences.

Long range shooting is sometimes required when hunting certain species. It is therefore recommended to shoot ones rifle from tripods ( sitting and standing position ) at 100 to 350 yards in order to get an idea of the rifle’s performance as well as the bullet drop on the different distances.

The use of a good quality variable telescope can prove to be equally important than the rifle. It is always advisable to bring an extra telescope with.

Good quality hard cored ammunition like Barnes X and Federal Premium would be adequate. Normally not more than sixty rounds would be needed.

Use the strongest possible shock resistant rifle case. Rather let ones rifle case take the beating at the airports.

Rifles can be rented from Mayogi Safaris for $ 100 per rifle for the duration of the safari and ammunition at cost price.
